Experiencing Reflexology for the First Time
To new patients, a reflexology appointment often seems like a foot or hand massage. In reality, a skilled therapist is applying exercise pressure to reflex areas formed by 7,200 nerve endings in each hand and foot.
Technically, medical reflexology is “a complementary, biological, integrative, blended health science which encourages improved instruction to each and every gland, organ, and part of the body, thus persuading the body to biologically correct, strengthen, and reinforce itself, to reach balance, normalization, and homeostasis.” (Definition courtesy of the International Academy of Medical Reflexology.)
Of course, most people just want to know, how are my feet connected to the pain in my _____ (you fill in the blank). Reflexology therapy is based on research showing a neurological relationship between the body’s extremities, your hand and feet, and the internal organs. It is your central nervous system that provides the connection between various sources of pain and your feet or hands. By the application of specific pressures, a trained reflexologist sends a calming message from the nerves in your feet or hands to the central nervous system, helping to induce relaxation, promote blood flow, and positively affect many body systems, from your organs and immune system to your respiratory system.
Reflexology is appropriate for people from all walks of life and all age groups, from babies to the elderly.

Your Therapist – Kerri Croushore
Kerri Croushore is a 2004 graduate of the International Academy of Medical Reflexology, but has over 20 years of experience in reflexology. Before becoming a licensed reflexologist, Kerri was exposed to the practice of reflexology from the age of 10 by her stepfather, who himself had 25 years experience practicing semi-professionally in the field.
Kerri prefers to work on the feet, which have less intricate muscles and are easier to manipulate. Should you have a foot injury or find yourself very ticklish, Kerri does work on the hands. (Surgical gloves are used, along with aloe vera for its soothing qualities.)
Three unique offerings set Kerri apart from many reflexologists:
- Cold pack therapy: the use of ice on one foot to help relax the nerves while the other is being worked on.
- At your request, Kerri will talk to your medical doctor, even go with you to your medical appointment to better coordinate your reflexology therapy.
- Kerri gives you simple reflex exercises you can perform on your own hands, to help calm your nerves between visits.
Appointments
If there is pain or a problem, Kerri suggests appointments 1-2 times per week for 3 to 4 weeks. Individual treatments vary, with the frequency of your appointments depending both on the severity of your pain and how long it has persisted. After your body begins to heal itself, less frequent maintenance appointments can help you maintain your health.
A session lasts between 35 and 45 minutes and costs $40.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Question: Can reflexology heal my injury?
- Answer: No. Reflexology can’t heal spinal injuries or mend broken bones. Reflexology works with nerve endings to persuade your body to biologically correct, strengthen, and reinforce itself. Relief from symptoms depends on your own body’s ability to respond.
- Question: What can reflexology help?
- Answer: Since it encourages the body to heal itself, reflexology can help with many issues, including sinuses, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and bursitis. It can help with almost any problem that isn’t caused by a manipulation injury like broken bones or a car accident (and even then, the relief provided to the nerves may aid your body in the healing process).
- Question: Do I have to take off my shoes and socks?
- Answer: Yes, Kerri works on bare feet. She uses surgical gloves and aloe vera. Your session can be performed without aloe vera if you experience sensitivity or have other concerns.
- Question: What if I’m ticklish?
- Answer: Generally because of the nature of the therapeutic touch involved, Kerri can work on the feet of people who are ticklish. In rare instances, it may be necessary to work on the hands instead of the feet.
- Question: How much does a reflexology session cost?
- Answer: $40/session that lasts 35-45 minutes.
- Question: Will you travel for appointments?
- Answer: Yes, when needed, Kerri will travel. Please call to learn travel costs.
- Question: How often do I have to come?
- Answer: That depends on the severity of the issue or how long you’ve had the problem. Generally people need to come more frequently at first, then less frequently over time. 1-2 times per week to start and then less often. Many people come every couple of months for maintenance.
- Question: Have you worked on children?
- Answer: Kerri has worked on her own children since they were first born. She’s helped clients with babies as young as one day old.
